You Need To Calm Down, Boston…Seriously…
I know it was something called “Patriots’ Day” and three-quarters of the city was drunk (the rest were running a marathon), but yesterday the people of Boston fed the stereotype of being an over-sensitive, reactionary, trigger-happy fan base. This time poor Bobby Valentine was the target, and the Boston media, fans, and players were, and continue to be, the assailants.
It all started with a question about Kevin Youkilis, who is off to a slow start this season after having a sub-par, injury-plagued 2011, on Valentine’s appearance on WHDH’s Sports Extra talk show. Continue reading →

Annoying Fan Behavior #22: Trying To Get On The Jumbotron At Any Cost
For those of you that didn’t watch yesterday’s Bulls-Heat game (or see the highlights), you missed out on one of the most despicable sights the NBA has ever seen. No, I’m not talking about John Lucas being jumped over like an irksome puddle in the street by LeBron James. This was much, much worse.
During the fourth quarter the ABC sideline reporter relayed a story about Carlos Boozer’s family, which happened to be in attendance. Naturally the camera’s focused on them during the story, but what we saw through the lens of the camera was quite disturbing. Please take a look below…if you can stomach it. Continue reading →

Annoying Fan Behavior #4: Sporting the Apparel of a Team That’s Not Even Playing
When attending games, fans often wear clothing affiliated with the home team to show their support. They’ll put on a hat, t-shirt, jersey, or their favorite player’s hair to show that they’re proud to be a fan of their local team.
Likewise, courageous fans of the visiting team often wear clothing representing their squad to make sure that everyone in the stadium knows where their loyalties lie. It’s a sign of a true fan that you’re willing to wear your team’s logo knowing that you’re going to get booed for the majority of the game.
But there is a third type of fan—a fan who inexplicably wears the gear of neither the home team nor the visiting team. He or she is the victim of Annoying Fan Behavior #4: Sporting the Apparel of a Team That’s Not Even Playing. Continue reading →

Annoying Fan Behavior #72: Repeatedly Reciting Statistics During A Game
Statistics are part of what make sports so fan-friendly. If you miss a game you can immediately see what happened by looking at the box score online. It will tell you a lot of things—who scored, who failed, who got injured—but it will never be the same as watching that game.
That’s why Annoying Fan Behavior #72: Repeatedly Reciting Stats During A Game is especially frustrating. Continue reading →

Annoying Fan Behavior #14: Taking Stadium Quizzes Way Too Seriously
Attending a live sporting event is a lot of fun, but you quickly become aware that there is much more downtime during a game than you realized. Instead of watching commercials, grabbing a beer, or tweeting something clever during timeouts, you’re forced to sit there and watch the uniformed event staff try to intimidate you into not running onto the field or court while you slowly start to realize just how uncomfortable your seat actually is.
This is the reason why some benevolent gentleman (or gentlewoman…feminists…) introduced the idea of keeping the audience entertained with a series of quizzes and games throughout the event. Continue reading →
